Nightmare of writer’s block or the stories argument!

Gargoyles, leprechauns and witches oh my, they sit and clog up in my head. No room for vampires they always say, aren’t vampires now nearly dead?
They always have been, I reply, that’s their charm and wonder and grace.
But the others they sit and they frown in despair as though I have slapped their face!
Stop this jealousy, I always cry, it’s the vampires turn not yours
But the leprechauns sit and they chastise me a lot for not allowing them to finish their wars.
Then the witches with their bleak little cackles threaten to curse me if I forget, to add to their stories a little more gory, about a curse they’ve beset.
The gargoyle just moans and groans and cries out words like ALAS! Get on with my story, do not ignore me or I will kick you up the ass!
Now that’s quite enough bad language from you, says I with a determined glare
If I want to sit and write something else, I shall and it’s the vampire’s lair!
Not him again, they all shout and cry once again for the umpteenth time, you have to finish us before you start another story, song or rhyme!
Oh for peace sake, I say in an irate moan, I’ll burn you to ashes if I please, if you annoy me just once more you’re out of the door, stop bringing me to my knees
It is vampires tonight, whether you want it or like, I need to get them down too, so I start on the story, it’s a little bit gory, so the vampire sits in the queue.
Why stop there in my elaborate lair? Asks the vampire looking at me
Oh don’t you start, I say to him, don’t become like the other three!
Just leave me alone whilst I sit and think and sip at my sweet black tea.
Now where was I? I say to myself, oh yes, the miserable banshee!

The poem above reflects on my exact thoughts as a writer.  My stories which are put on hold are literally lining up to nag me to think of them even now I intend to focus on just one or two.  I hope a lot of writers who have unfinished projects agree that they also go through the same thing as me, because if not, then perhaps I need a therapist, ha-ha!

I often struggle with which of my stories to concentrate on day to day; some ideas have been coming on and off the shelf for the last twenty six years, yes, twenty six years!  I have stories about leprechauns, gargoyles, witches, banshees, and zombies, girls cooped up in a mental asylum, demon animals, vampires and many more.  Back in 2009 I decided to make a list of all the stories I had started but never finished past the first draft and the list came to 76; I lost the list when moving house and I have since added to it, I also lost a lot of papers when moving house so a lot of the ideas I started are lost somewhere in time and space.

Due to the motivational archive I found on YouTube recently, I discovered that it’s not that I lacked momentum when I was writing for all these years; I lacked consistency with sticking with something to the end.  I didn’t prioritise which idea I wanted to finish the most and that is what I have been focusing on since mid-September, I have been trying to focus my ideas on just two books and I have set myself a goal, which the archives suggested would help me.  I am to finish the leprechaun novel by June 2019 but the vampire novel must be finished by the end of January.

The vampire novel I am working on is part of NaNoWriMo, but I know in my hearts of heart that 50,000 words is just too short for the story I am writing, wrimo is merely giving me the boost that I need to press on with it, so I shan’t be stopping at the end of November.  I also found other sites where writers can set their own goals, I found it through http://writetrack.davidsgale.com and there is another one called http://nanocountdown.com/advanced.html  you can set your own schedules and daily word count, it helps keeps you focused.

There will be another, very short post later on today when I have finished writing for the day to update you on how much I’ve done on the monthly challenge and other writing projects.

Ciao for now.

Myths of the tailless four arm mers

Every mermaid is expected to drown in her own tears

For the dreams she’s had for years, of walking on hot sands like a lady for a man

A thousand myths and legends tear at the mermaid’s heart

Myths of the tailless four arm mers

She has seen them in her people’s art

How she wished to be an explorer of their sands

Witnessing the dry green scape and touch them with her hands

How she wished she knew, what it meant to be dry

Dry from all her tears

The foregoing poem was written rather quickly and the quality has surprised me, usually I think everything I do is useless, but I like this piece.  In fact I like it so much, I feel a story coming on, whether it will be short enough for me to want to post that eventually on this blog, I don’t know, but it is inspiring me to do more and there are other poems creeping into my head of a similar theme too!

My vampires 1

My vampires are what makes me, me

They are a part of me, you see

There are not unkind or something to fear

To me they are something to cheer

They are me

My vampires are mine you see

I will love them from here to eternity

Winter reborn – Happy New Year

Inktober Snowman - copyright Tina Cousins 2016

Inktober Snowman – copyright Tina Cousins 2016

Winter is born again, through the tears of spring, the summer rain and the great bloody fall.
Now snowmen can have their ball, their jewels of ice and snowflake
Each year an elegant remake of the old becoming new
In crisp white gowns they gander at the brilliant white fields and lanes
Knowing that each year is different, knowing each year is just the same
The festivities are just starting
What fun there is to be?
Celebrating life’s ending
Celebrating with grand feasts
All the snowmen gather, with their noses of carrot and coal
Dancing on the frozen lake
Dancing with all their soul
And as winter nears its ending, the beginning begins to start
A brand new year is coming
Get ready with all your heart
For the winter’s end is warming
And spring is coming by
To melt the snowmen to heaven
With their jewels of snow and ice
And there you have it
Here it comes
Yes, the New Year has arrived
And the New Year has begun

The madness known as blood lust

I cannot satisfy my blood lust anymore

It attacks me each and every day

In each and every way I want more

I cannot refuse it, but it doesn’t quench my thirst

So I carry on, my eternity is turning grey

I wish it would stop, to fate I implore

I’ve heard some of us go mad

The vampires of old have said

Drink blood till it’s cold and bad

A blood-lust can get you can get in your head

I can’t control it, it controls me

I can’t run away, from myself I can’t flee

I kill tirelessly, drinking, crying, and watching people dying because of me

I’m a vampire; I’ve gone mad I’ve bats in the belfry

I cannot stop the killing, someone please stop me

A vampire kills to survive, not more than three a week

Yet I keep on killing, I hunger for the last heart beat

That beautiful sound, that reason gets drowned in

The peace of the death of the victims I hold

The light in their eyes go out, this time is precious like gold

I am in heaven when they’re dead

For just a few moments

How I wish I could join them there forever

For I’m weary of heavens fragments

The vampires of old, they worry about me

They know I’ve lost my mind

But for now I cannot flee

Like an alcoholic I drink blood like wine

Drunk on the death of mortals

Endlessly seeking a portal

To end my existence

If you offered a way to end this

I’d take it in an instant

mother of the night

Delicately my footsteps follow a path through the forest of night

I am overshadowed by things of delight

The mossy branches overhang above my head

I am dancing a weave through the crowded trees

I disturb a spider in its web

Tiptoeing graciously into a clearing

I find the moon shining bright

I take the hood off from my head

And bathe in its light

My time is midnight

And it is night here

I hold all nightly things close to my chest

For to me, they are dear

I am the mother of the night

My children are the stars

I know only peace at night

Away from the morning scars

I whisper wishes onto all

Of dreams that may come true

I am the whispers of the night you know

My voice it heals and soothes

I’ll lull you into sleep each night

Away from daily woes

You always follow in my footsteps

But you will never know

I am the mother of the night

The children are my stars

For you all shine brightly in my dark

And I keep you in my jars

I hang you up in the darkened sky

To shine your radiant lights

So you can light the path for me, the mother of the night

my tin of brains

My mind is like an ocean where many thoughts do swim

Without them I am empty, like an opened tin

My thoughts are what makes me unique and who I am

But many people try to empty my can

I am just a human; my thoughts are my pride and joy

But people insist in changing me and this it does annoy

Why can’t people leave alone others with their thoughts?

Why can’t others see the light, it’s easy to find the torch

How can you be judgemental, when you’re unique too?

How can you keep judging others who are not you?

If you want peace, accept more, for who and what they are

For if you don’t you’ll surely soon, lead a lonely path

Many minds aren’t empty, though tight their lips may be

Because they’re scared of being known by people like thee

By people who will curse them or try to cut them down

By people who are monsters, who say they’re only clowning around

But words do cut us deeply and hurt us every day

So stop with your judgements and leave people alone today

For if you want peace on earth, enjoy the variety

Of other peoples looks and thoughts and relish in niceties

All it takes is a kind word, whether you’re telling the truth or not

If you think unkind things about others, then you should simply rot

You’re missing out on good friends by being the way you are

You’re a shallow hollow person who lives for repertoires

mocking caws

These are colors of the winter that I am seeing now

Painted with greys and whites the pictures to my tale

A tale of winter harsh and cold, of a time that’s best forgot

Of a time when I discovered, a body that morbidly rots

Along the banks of the canal, a ladies leg I saw

And I was ushered away fiercely, from the ravenous crow like caws

And I remember running, a running from that sound

I had no clue where I was going; I did not know where I was bound

I chose that moment not to tell, or speak of what I saw

And mockingly it followed, the crow with the callous caws

Why I did that I can’t tell, for fear is a funny thing

But to this day I still hear it, the mocking crow still sings

Caw, Caw, it goes all night, Caw, Caw, it goes all day

It will never leave me now, it will always stay

A punishment for cowardice, a punishment for my fear

No matter how hard I run from it, those caws I’ll always hear

I am being sent insane, a chastisement for my dread

And I will never forget this, not until I’m dead
