Yes today is the 5th day of Inktober and as you can see I have chosen a mermaid for my theme of the day!
Everybody knows what a mermaid is, but do you know what they are really like?
They aren’t what you see in Disney movies according certain world folklore and that’s for sure! They don’t go around singing at mortals and wishing they were humans and fall in love you know, well actually they do sing at mortals and when they do it’s a sign you really should block your ears and get out of that ocean and according to some legends, they do sometimes fall in love with mortals too, but it’s not all pearls and coral – oh no!
Mermaids from Ireland were called Merrows and they were supposed to be ugly creatures, with green hair, scales, and claws and were evil critters by all accounts. They had a penchant for falling in love with beautiful human men and would often kidnap them to take them into the sea to drown them so their spirit could live with them in the other realm or they would take on the appearance of a beautiful human woman and breed with him on land and disappear with or without her offspring and the groom.
In Russia they have the Rusalka which can be either benevolent or evil depending upon the individual, you could never tell what a Rusalka would be like if you saw one, so it was best to keep away from them. It is thought they were the spirits of young girls who were horrendously killed or had violent accidents, if their death was caused by a rape and a murder it was said that those would be evil spirits to men, as any man who goes near her in her transformed self would be garrotted to death by her long hair! Sometimes women who are in danger would become protected by the Rusalka from any man nearby who is about to harm her!
The Fin Folk of Norway and the Orkney Islands were often considered using humans as slaves and they only way to escape them were to throw coins of silver into the sea to distract them as they loved silver a lot!
So, the next time you think that mermaids are sweet endearing ladies of the sea, with shrill beautiful voices and you fancy taking your chances to get romantically involved with one – think again!
There is a whirlwind in my mind because I’ve been lost for so long
There is pain in my heart that is why there is sadness in my new song
I once danced in a palace of dragons
I once twirled in garments of silk
I once spoke regally to my people, without shame and without guilt
But I was taken from my world and into the world of men
My reality was shaken badly, I became broken, and will I mend?
There is no answer to my question
There is no answer to my calls
There is no hero who has found me
I miss the parties and the balls
I sit amongst humans thinking
That my reality is just a dream
That I fashioned another life to cope
With this realities yells and screams
But I hear the other realm whispering
Calling out my name
They say to me, dear Empress, you are not indeed insane
We will find you Empress, anyway we can
But for now you have to stay strong, in the world of man
And I whimper at their message and I cry an ocean of tears
They have not yet found me, though it’s been eighteen thousand years
How I wish the rainbow was a bridge
A bridge that I could cross
And leave this world for the other
And lay on my bed of moss
How I miss my dream world
How I know they miss me too
I hope to go back there someday
I hope that day is soon
Relaxed, lounging on the cream velvet chaise lounge dressed in a gold silk dress she smoked from her cigarette extension listening to adagio for strings on full volume, watching the city below her closing down for the night.
Her man, not far from her was helping himself to another glass of whiskey quietly and thoughtfully.
Years has past she thought to herself, years they have seen mortals below them come and go in their petty little lives, lives that they needed and not any of them ever questioned how long they’ve stayed in the area and how they’ve never changed, not even a spot.
Funny creatures she thought to herself.
Such potential though, their talents are wasted on their greed and their dramas, if only they knew.
Finally she broke the silence.
“Are you hunting tonight darling”? She said to the man behind her.
“I hadn’t thought of it, why are you hungry then my dear”? He enquired.
Now I understand that this snippet is full of adverbs and mistakes, but this is what I do when I am between writing actual stories. I just sit and I write random stuff and the most frustrating thing is that on Facebook I have many friends who are writers and I ask them questions like “do you do this too”? They never answer me. So am I alone in how I write? Or do all writers sit down with a plan?
Also understand that this is a first draft and is not part of a planned story, it was just something I wanted to get out of my head and I couldn’t go any further with.
The field is green, the sky is blue and yet I never tire of you
Nature fine and nature pure
Often I’ll find things that are obscure
Day to day there’s new things to find
And none of them are to be claimed for none of them are mine
Each breeze and petal, leaf and stone
Are not mine to touch, move or own
They are just there, for us to find
But most of us are almost blind
We try to own nature in any way
Take and take and do not play
I love nature, leave it be
Let all nature remain free
Humans have it easy
When you sit back and think
Animals in the wild see death and do not blink
Every day they live their lives in the fear of the unknown
This is what they’re used to
This is how they’re grown
A little bird on the wing once isolated to a nest
Filled of dead brothers and sisters
Rotten to the flesh
It carries on its little life as if it doesn’t care
But that is how it survives, because it knows that life’s unfair
Gazelles on the African plain run for their lives each day
They grow to see their neighbors, friends, relatives picked away
Yet do they sit and mope all day?
Do they have time to mourn?
Please remember what I’ve said above, and don’t be too forlorn
Human have it easy in comparison to them
Just take life as it comes, do not, yourself condemn
